Thanks to the generous support of the Excellence Strategy of Heidelberg University, Cindy was able to stay for 3 months this year. She taught the worm course with Carmen and performed ribosome profiling experiments in the lab together with Gamze.

Oli and Gamze wrote a review article on “α-Synuclein Strains: Does Amyloid Conformation Explain the Heterogeneity of Synucleinopathies?” in which Oli once again demonstrated his excellent skills in creating scientific illustrations.

Practical experience is important for Biology students, therefore we made the C. elegans practical possible despite the extra effort due to the pandemic.
We used the forced absence from the lab to write two review papers. Jessica and Eliana wrote about “Molecular Chaperones: A Double-Edged Sword in Neurodegenerative Diseases” and Alex about “C. elegans Models to Study the Propagation of Prions and Prion-Like Proteins“. Check them out.
Many thanks to the DKFZ for hosting our lab after we had to move out of the ZMBH due to a water pipe leakage.

Congratulations to Eliana for successfully defending her dissertation! We had a belated party to celebrate the first PhD student from the Nussbaum lab after we finally were allowed to meet in person again this summer. We wish her all the best for her postdoctoral research with Patrik Verstreken in Leuven!
Eliana’s paper “Disassembly of Tau fibrils by the human Hsp70 disaggregation machinery generates small seeding-competent species” was published today in JBC. Eliana spearheaded this collaboration as part of the EU JPND PROTEST-70 project. Many thanks to our colleagues for their contributions!
Jessica’s Paper “The HSP110/HSP70 disaggregation system generates spreading-competent toxic α-synuclein species” in EMBO J is online! Congratulations to everyone involved!

Lab outing to the Heidelberg Christmas market. It was also time to say goodbye to Cindy Voisine. We hosted Cindy for her sabbatical. Many thanks to the SFB1036 and the Fulbright program for their support! It was great to have her back in the lab, and we look forward to her next visit!
